If you’re a beginner at poker, check out our guide for those starting out here but if you feel you’re ready to take your game to the next level, these tips are for you.
Whether you think you’re at an intermediate or advanced level, these seven simple guidelines can help you master poker.
Here are Moorman’s top tips:
Be aware of your opponents and your stack size at all time.
When you play online poker all of that information is right in front of you, but in live poker you have to be more conscious to be keeping track.
Be careful not to give off tells to your opponents. Some poker players opt to wear sunglasses to mask blinking patterns, or scarves to hide their neck potentially throbbing.
Sometimes I notice players with a leg tick whenever they are bluffing.
You should be aware of all your motions and try to stay as stoic as possible as not to give any of your opponents extra information for their decisions.
Sometimes you will take a bad beat, but you have to remember you still have chips.
I often see people forget this after losing a big hand and essentially throw away what could have still been a huge shot for them.
If you need a second to regroup, stand up and take a 5 minute walk. Missing a hand or two is better than misplaying 1 huge hand.
You should be watching hands at your table even if you aren’t involved in them.
You could pick up a lot of information about your opponents that could help you so much on future decisions.
That information is not just limited to betting patterns and live tells.
I often see people trying to outplay the best players at the table and this just isn’t necessary.
You should pick your spots wisely and play the game you know how to play with confidence.
Using all the tips above and all the information you have gained at the table should help you to do just that.
It’s important to not be aware of only your hand.
You need to be thinking about what hand your opponent has and what they’re likely to do.
Always think about what your opponent thinks you will do.
Master this and you can begin to push them into making errors.
